Why Your Writing Keeps Getting Flagged as AI (And How to Sound Like Yourself Again)
If you've had an email, essay, or report flagged as "likely AI-generated" even though you wrote every word yourself, you're not imagining it. AI detectors got noticeably more aggressive in the first half of 2026, and the false-positive rate went up right along with it - especially for anyone who writes cleanly, edits heavily, or isn't a native English speaker.
Why this is suddenly everywhere in 2026
Detectors like GPTZero, Turnitin, and Originality.ai retrained their models this year to catch more genuinely AI-written text - and in the process, they got a lot more sensitive to writing that just happens to look "too even." Some universities have also started building stylometric baselines from a student's past essays and comparing new work against them, which produces even more false positives when someone's style naturally shifts day to day.
None of this is about catching people who used ChatGPT to cheat. It's about the collateral damage: real writers, plenty of whom have never touched an AI tool, getting a note that says their own work "reads like AI."
What actually trips a detector
Detectors don't read for meaning - they read for statistical patterns. A few of the biggest tells:
- Uniform sentence length. Human writing naturally varies - a punchy five-word sentence next to a much longer one. Over-polished writing tends to settle into a narrow, "goldilocks" range instead.
- Low burstiness. This is the technical term for that variation. Low burstiness means suspiciously consistent rhythm across a whole document.
- Predictable word choice. Detectors also measure "perplexity" - how surprising your next word is. Very predictable phrasing scores as more AI-like.
- No personality tangents. Real writing wanders slightly - a parenthetical, an aside, a specific detail. Heavy editing tends to strip all of that out.
A 2-minute self-check
Before you assume a detector is wrong (or right), run your own draft through this checklist:
- Read it out loud. If every sentence lands at close to the same length, that's your first flag.
- Look for at least one specific, concrete detail per paragraph - a real example, a number, a name. Generic writing reads as generic to a detector, too.
- Check for hedge words repeated identically throughout ("it's worth noting," "in today's world," "overall"). The same transition phrase over and over is a tell.
- If you ran the draft through a grammar tool more than once, that's often where the flattening happens - each pass smooths out a bit more of your natural variation.

What actually holds up is writing (or rewriting) so it sounds like a specific person wrote it, because that's what both detectors and human readers are really responding to.
