What Is an AI Token? Tokens in AI Apps Explained

An AI token has two common meanings: in language models, a token is a chunk of text (roughly 3-4 characters) that the model reads and generates; in AI app pricing, a token is a usage unit - typically one AI action or command execution.

Explanation

Language models like GPT-5.2 and Claude process text as tokens - small pieces of words. "Transformation" might be split into 3 model tokens. AI providers bill developers per million of these model tokens, which is precise but hard to predict as a user.

That is why many AI apps simplify pricing into app-level tokens: one token equals one completed AI action, regardless of how many model tokens it consumed under the hood. You do not need to estimate character counts - a short grammar fix and a long rewrite each cost one token.

In Echoo, one token is one successful managed AI command execution: a rewrite, a translation, a summary, or a cleanup. Failed commands do not count, and commands run in BYOK mode (with your own API key) or on local models never consume tokens.

How Echoo Helps

Echoo uses tokens as its pricing unit for managed plans: every new user gets 10 free tokens with no API key or card, Pro includes 400 tokens per month for $6.99, and Max includes 800 for $9.99. BYOK mode and local models bypass tokens entirely - those commands are free at the app level, you just pay your provider directly if it charges.
