Translating English to Thai

Thai is written without spaces between words - spaces mark phrase or sentence boundaries instead - so segmentation has to be inferred, and a translation that inserts English-style spacing is immediately wrong. Thai is tonal with five tones, marked by a combination of tone marks, consonant class and syllable structure rather than by diacritics alone. The politeness particles ครับ and ค่ะ end sentences and differ by the speaker's gender, so a translation has to know who is speaking. Thai also has an elaborate register system, with separate vocabulary for royal, formal, and everyday speech. There is no inflection: no tense, no plurals, no articles. Thai script stacks vowel marks above and below consonants, which is why poor rendering looks garbled rather than merely misspelled.
