Translating Vietnamese to English
Vietnamese pronouns are kinship terms chosen by relative age and social position, so the source encodes a relationship that English flattens into I and you - and reading it correctly is required to know who is speaking at all. Vietnamese has no inflection: no tense endings, no plurals, no cases, with time marked by optional particles that are frequently dropped when context makes them redundant. English then has to commit to a tense the original left open. Tone marks are part of the word rather than accents, so input stripped of them is genuinely ambiguous. Vietnamese uses classifiers before counted nouns, and much of its formal vocabulary is Sino-Vietnamese, carrying a register shift English has to rebuild.
