Best Practices & Tips

Brainstorming with AI breaks through creative blocks by generating diverse perspectives you might not consider on your own. The key to effective AI brainstorming is providing the right context and knowing how to iterate on initial ideas.

Write a clear problem statement before brainstorming. Instead of selecting a vague topic like "marketing ideas," write a focused brief: "We need content ideas for launching a B2B SaaS product targeting HR managers, focusing on LinkedIn and email channels, budget under $5K." The more specific your input, the more relevant and actionable the brainstormed ideas will be. Select this entire brief and run the Brainstorm command.

Iterate on promising ideas by selecting a single generated idea and running the command again. This produces variations and deeper explorations of that specific direction. You can go through multiple rounds of refinement, narrowing from broad concepts to specific, implementable plans. This iterative approach mimics how real brainstorming sessions work, starting wide and converging on the best options.

Create different brainstorming commands for different thinking styles. A "Divergent Ideas" command should generate wildly different approaches with no constraints. A "Practical Ideas" command should focus on feasible, low-cost solutions. A "Contrarian Ideas" command should challenge assumptions and suggest unconventional approaches. Having these as separate shortcuts gives you quick access to different creative modes.

Use the Generate Alternative command alongside brainstorming for existing content. While Brainstorm generates ideas from a problem statement, Generate Alternative takes existing text and produces alternative versions. This is perfect for A/B testing headlines, exploring different angles on the same topic, or finding better ways to phrase key messages.

Choose Anthropic Claude or OpenAI for brainstorming tasks as they produce the most creative and diverse outputs. Claude is particularly good at generating ideas that challenge assumptions. Google Gemini works well and is available on the free tier. For brainstorming sessions involving confidential business strategy, use Ollama with a capable local model.

Capture brainstorming output in a note-taking app. Use the popup output mode so ideas appear in a separate window, then copy the best ones into your planning document. Running multiple brainstorming rounds and comparing outputs across sessions often yields the strongest results.

Pro Tips

1

Write a detailed problem brief with constraints, audience, and goals rather than a vague topic. The AI generates far more relevant ideas with specific context.

2

Iterate by selecting a single promising idea from the output and running Brainstorm again to get deeper explorations and variations of that direction.

3

Create separate commands for different brainstorming modes: "Wild Ideas" with no constraints, "Practical Ideas" focused on feasibility, and "Contrarian Ideas" to challenge assumptions.

4

Use the Generate Alternative command on existing content like headlines or taglines to quickly produce A/B testing variants.
