Best Practices & Tips

Text summarization is one of the most powerful AI capabilities, but getting useful summaries requires knowing how to guide the AI effectively. The key is matching your summarization approach to your specific need.

Create purpose-specific summarization commands rather than relying on a single generic one. A "Key Takeaways" command that extracts the 3-5 most important points works differently from an "Executive Summary" command that provides a narrative overview. A "Meeting Notes Summary" command should focus on decisions made, action items, and owners. Build separate commands for each of these use cases and assign them distinct shortcuts.

Select the right amount of text for optimal results. While modern AI models like Gemini 2.5 can handle extremely long contexts, summaries tend to be more accurate when you select focused sections rather than entire documents. For a long research paper, summarize the abstract and conclusion together for a quick overview, or summarize each section individually for a detailed breakdown.

Choose your AI provider based on the complexity of the content. Google Gemini handles long-form content exceptionally well thanks to its large context window. Anthropic Claude excels at nuanced summarization that preserves important subtleties and caveats. OpenAI models are fast and produce clean, well-structured summaries. For confidential documents, use Ollama with a local model.

Use the popup output mode for summaries so you can reference both the original text and the summary. This is especially useful for research and study, where you want to verify that the summary captures all critical points.

For recurring summarization tasks like daily news digests or weekly report summaries, create a command with specific formatting instructions. Tell the AI to use bullet points, limit the summary to a specific length, or organize information by category. The more specific your instructions, the more consistent and useful your summaries will be.

Combine summarization with other commands for powerful workflows. Summarize a long article, then run the Action Items command on the summary to extract tasks. Or summarize text in one language and translate the summary into another for cross-language research.

Pro Tips

1

Create multiple summary commands with different output formats - bullet points for quick scanning, narrative paragraphs for reports, and structured outlines for study notes.

2

For very long documents, summarize sections individually rather than the entire document at once. The AI produces more accurate summaries with focused context.

3

Chain the Summarize command with Action Items to extract tasks from meeting notes in two quick shortcut presses.
