Press and hold your configured voice shortcut (or toggle mode) and start speaking.

  4. Text appears instantly

Your speech is transcribed locally and inserted where your cursor is.

Best Practices & Tips

Voice dictation with Echoo transforms how you interact with your Mac. The built-in FluidAudio engine powered by NVIDIA Parakeet runs entirely on Apple Neural Engine, meaning your voice never leaves your device. Understanding how to use it effectively will dramatically improve your productivity.

Start by choosing the right input mode. Echoo offers two dictation modes: hold-to-speak and toggle. Hold-to-speak is ideal for short inputs like messages, search queries, and quick notes - press and hold your shortcut, speak, and release. Toggle mode works better for longer dictation sessions like writing emails, journal entries, or documents - press once to start, speak as long as you need, then press again to stop.

Speak naturally in complete sentences. The AI engine performs significantly better with natural speech patterns than with slow, word-by-word dictation. Pause briefly between sentences to help the model identify sentence boundaries, but don't over-enunciate or speak unnaturally slowly. The model is trained on natural conversational speech and handles normal speaking pace and accents well.

Enable AI post-processing to elevate your dictation results. Raw transcription captures what you say, but post-processing can fix grammar, add punctuation, format text, or even translate your speech into another language. Set up a grammar correction command as your post-processor for everyday dictation. For specific use cases, create dedicated post-processing commands - one that formats dictation as bullet points for meeting notes, or one that adds markdown formatting for documentation.

Optimize your environment for better transcription accuracy. While the FluidAudio engine handles background noise well, speaking in a quieter environment improves accuracy. Use a decent microphone - even basic AirPods provide better input than your Mac's built-in microphone at a distance. Position yourself consistently relative to your microphone for the best results.

Build dictation into your daily workflow. Start emails by dictating a rough draft, then use the Professional Tone command to polish it. Take meeting notes by dictating key points in real time. Draft long-form content by speaking your ideas first, then editing the transcription. Many people find they can produce first drafts 3-4x faster by speaking than by typing.

Pro Tips

1

Enable AI post-processing with a grammar correction command to automatically fix punctuation and capitalization in your transcriptions.

2

Use toggle mode for longer dictation sessions like emails or documents, and hold-to-speak mode for quick inputs like search queries and short messages.

3

Create a dedicated post-processing command that formats dictation as bullet points for faster meeting note capture.

4

Chain voice dictation with translation by setting a Translate command as the post-processor - speak in your native language and get text in the target language.
