What Is a Managed API Key? AI Apps Without API Setup

A managed API key is an arrangement where the app developer holds the API credentials to an AI provider and routes your requests through them, so you never have to create, fund, or store an API key yourself.

Explanation

Using an AI provider directly requires signing up, adding a payment method, generating an API key, and pasting it into your tool - a real barrier for non-developers. With a managed key, the app does all of that behind the scenes: you install, and AI features simply work.

The trade-offs: managed access is usually metered (a monthly allowance of actions or tokens) and requests route via the vendor's account. The alternative is BYOK (Bring Your Own Key), where you supply your own provider key - more setup, but unmetered by the app and billed directly by the provider.

Many modern AI apps offer both: a managed mode for instant, zero-setup use, and a BYOK mode for power users who want direct provider control.

How Echoo Helps

Echoo ships with a managed key so it works the moment you install it: your first 10 tokens are free with no API key or card, and Pro ($6.99/month, 400 tokens) and Max ($9.99/month, 800 tokens) continue on the managed key. Power users can switch to the free BYOK mode - your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google key stored in Apple Keychain - or run local models via Ollama with no key at all.
