What Is AI Read Aloud? Text-to-Speech with AI Pre-Processing

AI Read Aloud is a feature that speaks selected text aloud using text-to-speech, with the option to run AI processing on the text first. This lets you hear a summarized, translated, or rewritten version of any text rather than just the raw original.

Explanation

Traditional text-to-speech (TTS) reads text exactly as written. AI Read Aloud adds an intelligence layer: before speaking, it can optionally run your text through any AI command.

For example, you can select a long English article and have Echoo summarize it, translate the summary to French, then read the French summary aloud. The AI does the heavy lifting, then your Mac speaks the result.

Modern TTS engines detect language automatically and select the appropriate voice. This means mixed-language workflows are seamless - the system switches voices to match the content language.

Adjustable speech rate (0.5x to 2x) lets you control the pace. Press the shortcut again to stop playback at any time.

How Echoo Helps

Echoo's Read Aloud (shortcut: Option+L) uses macOS native text-to-speech with automatic language detection across 25+ languages. Chain any AI command as a pre-processing step: summarize then read, translate then read, simplify then read. Adjustable speed from 0.5x to 2x. Press the shortcut again to stop.
